Japan’s Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi said that Sri Lanka’s location in the Indian Ocean is essential for creating a free and open Indo-Pacific region and Sri Lanka is an important partner.Sri Lanka is a key partner in the Tokyo-led initiative aimed at building security and economic cooperation around the Indo-Pacific.Japan’s assistance to emerging economies is particularly in the form of support for maritime security, provision of coast guard patrol boats and equipment, and other infrastructural cooperation.Sri Lanka’s Worst Economic Crisis:Sri Lanka had an external debt of US$51 billion in 2022 – most of which was owed to China. Sri Lanka became the first Asia-Pacific country to experience an economic crisis since the late 1990s.
