The news comes two weeks after the legendary soccer player Ian Wright was racially abused by an FUT player. The player received a lifelong exclusion for life from EA Sports FC online services. Moreover, within a short time following the incident Wright talked about it on his show. Wright said how grateful for the fact that EA took action and said that EA also informed him that they will be changing its policy on handling race within FC 24.
Eurogamer wrote about the changes to the policy and how they affect the players throughout FC 24. Eurogamer is a prolific writer on the many ways in which racism is brought out in Pro Clubs including making use of the commentary in FC 24 to deliberately use names that appear to be racist slurs, calling custom clubs to support groups that are Islamophobic, and creating customized player faces that look like racist caricatures (to mention some).
Although EA has filtering and reporting tools implemented but players have been able avoid them by mispelling the words. EA issued an update to Eurogamer on the problem and the steps it’s taking to address the problems. In the declaration, EA says, “We are committed to investigating all reports and take action regularly based on our findings…We’re determined to continue to improve our tools and solutions to tackle new challenges, such as the development of more sophisticated monitoring and mitigation tools which will be available in the next few months.”
The statement further states the fact that, since FC 24 was launched on October 1. EA have banned 9.000 accounts and issued 25.000 warnings/suspensions for offensive or inappropriate content. Apart from the misuse by Ian Wright, FC 24’s FUT mode has also found itself subject to criticism over a number of other scandals. For instance, the case of an EA employee who sold rare cards to players. Because it is among the top played games on the planet issues of this kind are likely to occur. The problem was in the preparation (or absence of) which EA included.
There are, in fact, ways to report the abuse that has occurred on the game in FC 24. However, they aren’t quite as clearly available as players would like. As Eurogamer said, the filters currently in use are avoided by those who intend to use them to their advantage. Thus, although EA claims to have taken steps to stop the occurrence of these problems however, playing FUT and Pro Clubs will demonstrate contrary. The biggest issue, however will be the issue of whether FUT is legal generally with regard to EA Sports FC’s loot box, which remain an issue of contention. Given the current state of affairs currently, FC 24 will continue to be a source of controversy across the board for the sake of EA we should all hope that their promises are well-received and perhaps even earn it some positive publicity.
EA has banned permanently the account of a EA Sports FC player who made racist remarks against the soccer star Ian Wright. The ban of the 18-year-old follows the trend of major video game companies adopting measures against hate speech and racism including Blizzard who is actively banning accounts that engage in such actions.
Racism is a constant problem in games, particularly due to the anonymity of gaming. It’s not only words on screens, but it could be the voice of someone in a game or in a player’s group. It’s even defined certain communities, even though it’s not a reflection of the values of the businesses that create the game in which the communities grow. This summer following Black Lives Matter, Black Lives Matter protests, numerous games released statements in game to tackle the issue directly in hopes of bringing people in a moment where the world was in need of unity.
“We are extremely grateful for his partnership as well as his support. We would like Ian to know that he is receiving our complete support. In the past, Ian was subject to an incredibly racist and sexist verbal attack from the player who was eliminated from in a game that was part of FC 24. This behavior by the player was indefensible on all levels and we will not allow it to continue. The Positive Play Charter is the basis for our actions in situations like this, and so we’ve initiated the process of removing the player from ever playing in our games or logging into our website. The race slur must end. We’re determined to continue our efforts to promote positive play by taking actions to create a fun environment safe, fair, and secure for all.”
